Penang Trip 2006

0

Will be off to Penang next week, it has almost been 2 years since the last time I got around to Penang. That last time was for my convocation ceremony at USM. And that time I went and left Penang with satisfaction of never having to step there to study ever again. Hahahah! But not this time around, this time I will be going there this monday to visit old friends and rekindle old memories. I’m actually going to Penang under the guise of going for a course over there at Copthorne Orchid. But I’ll definitely be spending my nights out with old friends Smile DEFINITELY.
The course is actually for the data teachers, and I’m not one, but the principal told me to go. So what the heck. Smile The trip will be good for me… to take my mind off from work. I have only one thing left to do but everybody is badgering me to get it done quickly. I’m actually in charge of the time table for the school right now. And so far I’ve been delaying the new time table because I was waiting for the new program to arrive from KL. The program has arrive, so that mean I have to get to work, PRONTO! Those days spent at the pearl of the orient will include me typing in info about the teachers… huhu… not exactly big work… but it might get crazy… So see you peeps in penang Smile

Confusion to what the title says? Confused It’s in kelantanese which to translate would mean football fever. No I’ve not really been infected with it. But to say the least, I’ve just watched the opening match between Germany and Costa Rica with my dad. I was a bit late though, only started watching after the 20th minute, and my dad was watching alone. Yes, my dad likes (or is it love?) football, there is one adidas ball that he won’t let me play with in his closet. Although I did manage to see the last two goals, one by Paulo Wanchope and a terrific curve ball by Frings. Also saw that there is still some bad blood between Kahn and Lehmann, especially that cynical smile of his… Razz
He also have some weird memories about the world cup, one involving one of our sofa being broken because his friends got too excited while watching a game. Thinking As my dad is good with his hand, we still have the sofa around today, but yeah it creaks terribly everytime someone sits down.
I expect to see him glued to the TV, every night although I don’t think he’ll be watching the 3 am matches, unless they are between good teams. I still have memories of him waking up at 4 am to watch a match (France 1998). But I guess that didn’t really rub off on me though. But I still like to watch matches with him, just to keep him company. Smile
I think that’s it. I’m gonna skip the Poland match and sleep, have to head back early to school tomorrow. The school volleyball team is in dire need of training. Grin

A Break In My Routine

0

It’s been a while since I last wrote anything, not that I was intentionally neglecting my website but more because apparently my school connection to my website is blocked, or something to that. The last few week has been very busy.
First, I was busy with installing a wireless network for the school, it was collectively funded by the teachers in the school, we all sort of decided that we would like to use the internet outside of school hours. So I cooked up a plan, got the teachers to chip in and finally we have a working wireless network. Although there were hiccups to my plan, first from using 1 high gain antenna we had to use a lower gain one, and then set up 2 repeaters so that it would cover all of the school area. Although I would have like to just one main transmitter, seems the walls were too thick and we had to compensate. All of that has pass, and I’m just gladly monitoring the network quality from time to time.
Second, I was also busy with starting the training for the school volleyball team again. The kids were eager to start their training again. Knowing that they will be playing in a tournament a week after school reopens I was a bit anxious. Hopes that they will get their act together and will be able to perform when the time comes.
On another note, my school has just celebrated teachers’ day, it was quite splendid, with games for the teacher and students and the exchanging of gifts and so on, it was only marred by the fact that two of our students (one is in my homeroom) has just died the a few days before. It was a bitter sweet celebration, with me going to the student’s house right after the teachers’ day celebration and seeing all the red eyes, it got me remembering a line that I used to heard “it is not right that a child should die before his father”. Maybe it applies to us teachers as well, none of my students should actually die before me, not in accident at least.
Till next time, for now let me enjoy the school break Smile

From Perak To Terengganu

0

As the title suggests, I’ve been travelling a lot this past week, and more is still to come. I spent my weekends at Perak, mostly inside the UTP campus. Was escorting my students there for a return visit, as UTP students did a homestay program at the village where my school is situated. So off I went there in my car (the vice principal wants 2 car to follow the bus, in case anything happens). It was a tiring 3 hour drive (yes my school is that close to the border), with all the loopy turns and all; but the scenery change is reward enough for me, I also got to meet an old friend of mine that I got to know in my univ days. Had fun looking at all the changes that UTP introduced at the old USM engineering campus, the new mosque is way cool to me, looks like a bunch of mushroom packed together from far. Also has a nicely lit waterfall in front of the mosque. The finished Chancellor Hall is quite an architectural feat, especially considering the fact that the library rack is 3 floor high! Quite a sight too see, can hold up to 500k books.
As it is, that trip was really meant for the students, and I am just the escorts, so they had all the fun, while I just tagged along for their tour and so on. Meanwhile my travelling has not ended, tomorrow (tuesday) I’m supposed to check in at a hotel near Batu Buruk, Terengganu for a 3 day course on how to better use the Teaching Courseware CDs that the ministry have provided. The tiredness from travelling to UTP and back is not over and yet here I am off to another state, again! But, I’m looking forward to it, gonna meet up with a few friends who is in Terengganu right now, don’t know how many I’ll be able to meet in such a short notice, but who knows Smile
Till next time, maybe I’ll write a longer entry about my travels. Sorry no pictures, have lost my taste for taking pictures as the cost of film is rising, and I’m yet to decide on a new digital camera. Still have my eye on a D70s but still can’t afford one. Frown

The Accident

3

On Monday, selected teachers from all the school in the Gua Musang District had a short meeting with the KPPM, mainly it was about his project/initiative to get higher grades for students in Kelantan. After that I went looking for electrical goods, was trying to get a new washing machine as the previous one, my ex-housemate moved it to his new house, so I really need one, quick! After looking high and low for a good one, and to no avail, we decided to have a drink and cool down a bit.
Then we proceeded to the Kesedar Inn Mosque, as we wanted to go and pray at the mosque. Here is where the accident happened. At the traffic light leading to the mosque, some 200 meters away; I overtook a couple of motorbikes, as it was already late. As I was turning into the road leading to the mosque, I heard a loud noise, I was almost sure that I overturned and hit the curb, as so did a friend of mine at the back. But my other friend noticed in the side mirror that it was a motorist. I stopped the car and immediately went to see him, he was in quite a mess. Had some bruises and razes not too bad but enough to daze him, then I went back to the car and parked it at the side of the road and also got a brief look at my car, didn’t notice any real damage, then an uncle stopped me and asked what happened, I told him that I hit some guy on a motorbike. He headed straight for the motorist, as it turns out he’s a police officer, he questioned the guy and found out that he had no license. The policeman asked me if I wanted to make a police report, and I said yes, but it will depend on the damages on my car. So I headed back to the car to reinspect if the damage was big or not. But it turns out that it was only a scratch.
Broken bumper fittings and scratches
The motorbike on the other hand was in a terrible shape. So I told them that I’m not really going to push for a police report, as I could fix the damages on my own. The motorist on the other hand however still insisted on making a police report. Mostly I think, because he wanted to press me into getting his motorbike fixed for free. Meanwhile he was still being questioned by a group of police officers who have just arrived on the scene. After talking, and the policemen giving his final say that if we wanted to make a report we need to go the police station. The motorist (his name is Din) was sent over to the GM, and my friends and I had our Asar prayer at the Mosque. After that we went to the hospital to see the condition of Din, and also to ask him if he wanted to make a report, and if so take him to the police station. While there, my friend tried convincing him not to make a police report. It was getting really weird, the one that was at fault (him) was trying to make a police report, which will sure end him up in hot oil. While talking to him, a police sergeant arrived to take our details.Tthen he asked Din, if he wanted to make a police report, the he said, on what charges is he’s going to push the report. The sergeant also asked, did he think he’ll win in court. Finally, when his family member arrived, he was convinced by them not to make a police report. Me, I was willing to make a police report, so I can claim from my insurance, don’t have to fork out my own money to repair the car. But eventhough he was not going to make a report, he asked me for some money to repair his motorbike, my friend also told me to give some, not because it was my fault but more because the bike was in a mess, and my car only got a slight scratch. I sort of felt pity for him cause he is surely not going to be able to go to work, so I relented and gave him some token money. So that ended that particular day, instead of being able to go back early, we arrived at around 9 at the school. But, I’m still glad that nothing major happened, nobody died or anything.

Post KPLI Convo

DAY 1
Whoah that was a tiring trip. Got a bus on tuesday night, and I got there on wednesday morning, I rested a bit at my cousin’s place and then went on straight to my college with a friend of mine. Lucky that I didn’t have to get on the LRT as my friend volunteered to come and pick me up at Gombak. Got there and after a bit of confusion I manage to get registered for the convo, got my robes and all and then paid for the photography services. (yes it’s a bit weord paying beforehand) While at the college there was here and there small gatherings of KPLI students, stopped by a few of such gathering to exchange news and after a while we parted ways.
Had lunch at the Velodrome, and then after much thought my friend and I both skipped the rehearsal and went straight to Lowyat. Manage to buy myself some toys (big boy’s toy) Smile A Jabra bluetooth headset, a car charger for the phone and a SD Wifi card for my PDA. Also picked up some stuff that my friends wanted. Was thinking of buying a new skin for my PDA but they didn’t seem to have stock of what I wanted, maybe I’ll have my friend buy it for me next time. After hanging out at Lowyat for a while, I was already tired from lack of sleep and the non stop walking, so I decided to go back and had my friend drop me off at the Masjid Jamek LRT station.
Got back at my cousin’s home, but he’s still at the office, then suddenly I found myself waking up to the sound of the phone ringing, hahaha I accidentally slept must have been damn tired. Anyway the phone call was from my cousin he was outside and can’t get in because I locked the doors from the inside Razz Sorry cuz! Anyway that night I treated my cousin and his wife ( + baby) to a dinner at some seafood restaurant. I think it was one of those “Air Buah Gelas Besar” establishments located nearby. Had a splendid dinner, the food was amazing, and the juice was nice.. yummy!

Pre KPLI Convo

I’ve missed a lot of blogging, mostly because my hosting upgraded some items and then totally forgot to upgrade the perl package as well. Yes it seems I’m the only hostee here using perl to blog. WHAT!!! Forget bout that.. let us continue to the stories….
Things I did and happened while I was away…. 1. I went to Sri Tujuh Beach at Tumpat for my school’s Leadership Camp. Was the facilitator there. The camp is actually for the school leaders, i.e the prefects and what nots.. we had fun there (more like I did and they suffered). The students was constantly under pressure to be on time and everytime, especially because the first thing we did was to strip them off their watches and lend them 1 watch each night so they wont be late for subuh prayers. The activity was really packed and gruelling from activitiy to activity there’s not even enough time to think. A few friends and I handled the morning session, my part was to do some stretching with them.. that’s it. Then I’ll pass the baton to a friend who will do physical exercises with them. Those physical exercises are really tiring.. heheh…. the apex of it all is the last night, it started with a sombre enough activity which will force them to rethink on what and who they are and followed by a blind folded solo drop at the beach that will last till 1 AM, and then still blind folded they will have another activity at the hall that will continue until 4.30 AM in the morning. I failed at that one, was so damn tired, I bailed out at 3 AM. Razz We packed and left for home the next day.
2. Got my first pay + the backdated one that I was due. Was so glad of it all, splurged a hundred over on the car for a new floor mat and get it all cleaned up.. hehe will spent a few more ringgit to fix the alignment, yes the terrain I drive thru is a bit torturous for my car.
3. Will be packing off to my KPLI convocation at the college next week. Have already applied for a leave. The principal said something about signing it the other day. Wonder if it’s approved or not, I guess she’ll approve it anyway. Have already gotten myself the bus tickets for the day. Was thinking of going by car but decided otherwise as I don’t want to get there tired. Really looking forward to meeting all of my friends there, and on hearing all of their experiences so far. Only a few more days to go Smile

VBall Course? Finished!

0

Just finished my volleyball coaching course, it was a tiring 3 day for me. (asyik kena lari keliling court je) The theory class was interesting, and very informative, learning volleyball strategies and all. But the crazy part is practical part, that one is damn tiring, running around, doing formations and all. But all that is over and I already sat for the theory and practical part of the test. Hoping that I do pass and get certified as a volleyball coach.
Talking of certs, got a letter from my College, asking whether I want to attend my convocation, called my lecturer to ask about the convocation. I might be going seeing that many of my classmates are going as well. Just a good time to reminisce our one year together Smile

The Extra Mile

2

Just started a one week school holiday, not going to be really holidaying though. I have a short course on Volleyball Coaching. I’m also helping out my seniors at the school in doing their master assignments. The assignments are all in English, and they needed help in translating the related articles.
Talking about short courses and masters, I’ve always dwelt on the need to further my studies, at least getting a masters degree. My general feeling is that, a teacher’s education is and never will be complete, you need to continually educate yourself in order to teach/understand students better. In that point of view, why not get a masters in the process, something to show for all your efforts.
Nevertheless, there’s that itch at the back of the neck, what type of masters do I want, a Educational Management masters or a TESOL masters, or maybe even an IT in Ed masters? Guess I will have to think deep on where I want to go from here. An administrator? a true to the bone English teacher or a mix of IT/English teacher. Now that’s a very hard question to answer. Lucky that I still have a few more years to think on it. (most univ needs 2/3 year experience in teaching in order to get into a M.Ed program)
But for now, I’ll just concentrate on finishing the assignments and being a certified volleyball coach.
